GLOW

Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th February 2024

Glow 2024 will shine a light on the everyday creativity and heritage of Sowerby Bridge through two days of art, music, performance, food, family and community activities.

Building on the legacy of Fire and Water’s Winterlight Festival, Glow aims to be a beacon for Sowerby Bridge’s folk to come together and celebrate what makes the town special and imagine ways we can build a brighter future together through art, community and culture.

The event is focused around the Fire Station Theatre space within the Fire and Water building launched as part of the Sowerby Bridge High Street Heritage Action Zone.

ART AND HERITAGE COMMISSIONS

Explore the ground floor of the Fire Station building through site-specific artwork, film, audio, installations, experiences and performances

Turbynes Working Title | Sat and Sun 2 – 6pm

Turbynes dabble in creative documentary as live, installation-y happenings. By talking to people in Sowerby Bridge, they have created a dreamy audio-led piece which reflects on the aspirations, memories and working cultures of the town.

Folklore Tapes The Fire Station Phoenix | Sat 5-7pm Sun 2-5pm, procession Sun 6pm

A live light and sound show/installation that explores the transformative power of fire and water, destruction and rebirth, through the lens of historic local mill fires and the mythical symbolism of the phoenix, culminating in a procession on Sunday.

Edible Archives Drinking Sowerby Bridge | Sat 2-4pm and Sun 5-7pm

Edible Archives (Sonia Sandhu and Harry Jelley) explore heritage through playful and fresh, multi-sensory storytelling. Step into their experience and pick up a unique mocktail inspired by the industry and waterways of the town.

Michael Powell Mapping Sowerby Bridge | Sat and Sun 2 – 6pm

Do you have a story to share about a local place in and around Sowerby Bridge? Come and join artist Michael Powell during the Glow Weekender to help make an illustrated map of Sowerby Bridge!

Armelle Skatulski Made to Measure | Sat and Sun throughout

Explores Sowerby Bridge’s living legacy of clothes manufacturing and its links to Northern Soul dancing. “Soul bags” made to measure for the project become props bringing people together to explore industrial heritage and working-class culture through the theme of dance. ‘Soul bags’ courtesy of Spencers Trousers. Chemaine Cooke Iron | Sat 2pm, 4pm and Sun (various times)

Part installation, part dance, part talk ‘iron’ routes the relationships between nuts and bolts, a ballet pirouette, a brother and a sister, rave culture and fire stations to explore the space between facts and stories.

A taster of Sowerby Bridge’s eclectic open mic including fun and fizzy culture-clash electronica from Mho, Miss Airedale’s wry and melancholic surrealist pop, darkly humourous alt-folk troubadour Secret Pockets, woozy alt-country mavericks Horsebox, the two-headed electro-pop juggernaught of Cherryade, and Untitled Woman’s Ethereal songs of love and longing.

Game_Program | 9pm

Hypnotic and danceable retro hardware elecronica from Cowtown frontman and drummer of Leeds/Sowerby Bridge’s synthpop group Holodrum.

Kirsty’s Singalong Party | 2pm

Human jukebox takes your requests and invites you to singalong for a poptastic party.

Anjaana | 4pm

Bradford’s legendary Panjabi Folk / Banging Bhangra band formed in the late 70s and having since performed at hundreds of weddings, parties and events across the UK and India.

Skiband | 5pm

saxophone, sousaphone, trumpet, accordion and drums street band play a selection of tasty ska, calypso, reggae and rock ‘n’ roll tunes, with visual humour and anarchic improvisation.

Paeder Long | 6:30pm

Solo bagpipe set from Red Hippo leader and Welfare State International musical director.

Further Info

Fire & Water is both a physical space in the heart of Sowerby Bridge and a wider local place-making initiative with the aim of creating a landmark centre for arts, culture, community and education in the former Fire Station and Swimming Baths of Sowerby Bridge.

The annual Winterlight Festival was an outdoor ‘feast of sights and sound’ created by a group of artists, musicians and technicians to raise awareness of the building and to help envisage ways of using it in the long term that benefit a wide cross section of people.

The Fire Station Theatre is a venue for performance, music, arts and community within the Fire and Water arts centre. It is an incubator space and testbed for people to try things out, experience new things, collaborate and encounter together.

It has hosted gigs, performances, plays, workshops, parties, meetings, and creative get-togethers for people of all ages and backgrounds. The space is volunteer-led and the programme is shaped by its users.

The Fire Station is an engine room for new forms of creativity and community building in Sowerby Bridge.
